The UK's leading regional television news provider UTV and Welsh news publisher NWN Media's Wales Live partnership has been announced as the preferred bidder for the Government’s Independently Funded News Consortium (IFNC) pilot project in Wales.

The UTV and NWN Media partnership promises to create a dynamic cross-platform news force for Wales, delivering content for television, radio, newspaper and online services branded as WALES LIVE.

Northern Ireland’s local news programme called UTV Live is the most watched regional news programme in the whole of the UK. We are very proud of this achievement and our unrivalled experience in regional news broadcasting. In fact last year UTV Live’s audience averaged an impressive 34% share well ahead of BBC Northern Ireland’s news share of 26% and more than double that of ITV Wales Tonight’s 15% share.

UTV and NWN Media already have an unrivalled standard of journalism and of high quality production and offer comprehensive coverage.

UTV has direct experience on the ground in Wales as our sister company UTV Media (GB) owns and operates two successful radio stations in the Swansea area: The Wave and Swansea Sound. This year UTV celebrated 50 years of commitment to serving our region of Northern Ireland with high quality news and programming. We believe the WALES LIVE partnership which we have formed with NWN Media will deliver highly successful cross-platform content to the whole of Wales.

NWN Media is a multi-media publisher focusing on newspaper, magazine and internet publishing based in Mold, North Wales and is a family owned business that has been bringing news to the regions of North Wales and the Borders for over 150 years. NWN Media newspapers portfolio includes the three editions of The Leader circulating in Wrexham, Flintshire and Chester and weekly papers across North Wales, Mid Wales, Cheshire and Shropshire. NWN Media leads the way in regional print journalism in Wales.

The purpose of the Government policy is to deliver a better, richer, deeper news service for Wales, which it’s widely acknowledged has been under served in news provision. The WALES LIVE team would like to hear from you about how you’d like your news to be produced, gathered and delivered in the future.
